We know Buren best for using regular, contrasting colored stripes for creating site-specific installations. His ‘scene of production’ is always in relation to its setting and not only an autonomous work of art. Visual surface and architectural space are a result of stressing rows of windows longitudinally in juxtaposition with black and with patterns.
His work and approach is sometimes classified as abstract minimalism. Thus with his installation “cabane écaltée” exposed at Le Pavillon d’Arsenal in Paris, the ‘sculpture’ in interaction with natural light and the reflexion on the surface seems to mature into a sort of analytical painting.
