Science fiction as a genre of speculative fiction which typically deals with imaginative and futuristic concepts such as advanced science and technologyspace explorationtime travelparallel universes, and extraterrestrial life can explore science and technology in different ways, such as human responses to theoretical new advancements, or the consequences thereof.

By questioning human projections and representations of plants, here science fiction integrates narratives from science and science fiction as a means of creating new imaginary worlds.

The stories presented here are not centred on the idea of progress and modernity, but rather emerge in relation to the planet’s limits. By moving beyond an anthropocentric vision of the world, these emancipatory tales give plants a place and a voice. It is by considering the political power of the imaginary that we will be able to work together to build a fairer future.

By capturing the complexity of plant life and the deep connections that bind them, photography and video are highlighting the subjectivity, intelligence and expressive capacities of plants. These mediums have opened the way to a new ethical vision of plant life by challenging the anthropocentric viewpoint, placing plants on the same ontological level as other living organisms. They reveal the beauty of plant forms, shedding light on their vital force and reflecting on the relationship between nature and artifice, seeing plants as a source of inspiration for human creation.

The work of contemporary artists, such as Comandon, is more interested in the complexity of plant life as it interacts with its environment and its subjectivity, revealing the sophistication of the invisible mechanisms of plants and unlocking “some of the secrets of life”.

Life is far beyond imagination.
