Synopsis … fashion is inherently a social phenomenon, relating to the social and cultural context of an environment. Fashion is not only seen as purely aesthetic, as known, it is a medium for people to create an overall effect and express their opinions and overall art. Evidently a person cannot have a fashion by oneself, but for something to be defined as fashion, there needs to be dissemination and followers. Therefore a certain practice or expression is chosen by those in power in a community, herein fashion community, and that becomes “the fashion” as defined at a certain time by the people under influence of those in power … well …
Getting more precise, during the Womenswear Spring/Summer 2025 Paris Fashion Week, CANEX Presents Africa together with Tranoï served as a platform for Lagos Space Programme, Thebe Magugu, and Sukeina, all of whom offered an idiosyncratic testament to the contemporary state of African fashion. “African fashion is such a rich, eclectic category, but despite Africa’s prolific impact on architecture, dance, pop music, jazz, for some reason, fashion doesn’t seem to allow Africa to express itself in a distinctly African tonality” said designer Omar Salam. Maybe not yet.
Engaging in symbolic consumption may develop a sense of self over an extended period of time as various objects are collected as part of the process of establishing an identity and, when the symbolic meaning is shared in a social group, to communicate this identity to others. Why certain styles are deemed fashionable and others are not, may depend on cultural meaning, including norms and values. And of course decision makers.
By staging of shows at La Maison de l’Amérique de Latine for Paris Fashion Air or Palais Brongniart for CANEX, the former stock exchange, which industry heavyweights have previously chosen as the location for their shows, and even more the Shangri La Hotel to celebrate The BoF 500, the index of the people shaping the global fashion industry, Paris Fashion Week is likely to create “moments” ushering in an era where fashion may conquer the world.
